Directing is basically concerned with INSTRUCTING, GUIDING, MOTIVATING and INSPIRING people in the organization to achieve its objectives. To run a successful organization one should have all these qualities to handle their employees and co-workers in co-operation. Peace and harmony are the basic elements which help one to keep the organization working together in unity. It creates a sense of responsibility.
Directing is a key managerial function as it initiates action. A manager has to perform functions along with PLANNING, STAFFING & CONTROLLING. It prepares a setting up of an action for the next function to be performed. It takes place at all levels of management as everywhere directions are required to initiate the working of the plan. It is a continuous process it goes on & on throughout the life irrespective of the people occupying managerial position as without it the organizational activities cannot continue. It flows in downward direction of the hierarchy (top to bottom) as it requires order and command by the superior to the subordinate.
Directing is also one of the most important processes as it gives a kick start to the working of an organization. Especially in those organizations which have a well educated, hard working staff & is ready to work day & night for the upliftment of the organization. It creates a sense of self confidence in the person who is directing the organization, as it works at every level so the subordinates tasks are inter related as individual efforts need to be integrated by supervision, guidance & counseling. The major task of the superior is to motivate the subordinates to work hard and give them guidance accordingly. And make them to work willingly and perform well to the best of their ability by providing incentives. It is really necessary to keep a balance in the organization as the perception of achieving objectives differs from person to person. This may lead to conflicts and differences. Directing facilitates organizational adjustments and copes with the changing condition through communication and leadership.
Some of the major principles of Directing are mentioned below:
1.MAXIMUM INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTION- directing techniques help individuals in an organization to contribute to his maximum potential & to bring out the untapped energies of the employees.
2.HARMONY OF OBJECTIVES- good directing should provide harmony by convincing that employee’s reward and work efficiency are complimented to each other.
3.UNITY OF COMMAND- this will ensure effective direction. And avoid chaos and confusions.
4.APPROPRIATIVENESS OF DIRECTING TECHNIQUES- appropriate motivational and leadership techniques should be used.
5.MANAGERIAL COMMUNICATION- effective communication throughout all the levels makes directing effective. Conveys clear instructions for total understanding to subordinates and it gives a proper feedback by the employees.
6.USE OF INFORMAL ORGANISATION- informal organization exists in every formal organization.
7.LEADERSHIP- it influences subordinates positively.
These are the basic concepts of directing which are to be understood thoroughly and helps in the betterment , and smooth running of the organization as it plays an extremely important role for the upliftment of the organization.
