Human resources are the most important part of the success of any organization. The team, the organization and the man power is ultimately responsible for the progress of a company. It’s the human effort and the innovative ideas from employees which implemented along with the technological facilities available leads to maximizing the output for a company and increasing performance. It is always better to have more helping hands for a business to grow as it helps in increasing the efforts, contribution and hence output.

However, a huge work force doesn't necessarily mean efficiency as ineffective management can lead to trouble for the organization as well. And this is where an important concept of managing people effectively plays a critical role- Delegation of Authority.

Delegation of authority is primarily giving certain decision making powers to a few people in the organization to control and manage a certain set of people so as to effectively manage the workforce. Mostly, delegation of authority is to control the subordinates as the person incharge is vested with certain powers to control them.

It gives the person incharge an authority to control the way things function within the team, ensure effective team work and take certain important decisions regarding the team.

Some important points related to delegation of authority for effective man management can be discussed as below:

Responsibility- Delegation of authority gives the person incharge an extra burden of responsibility as his decisions play an important role in managing the team effectively. A person who accepts his responsibility especially during failures not only gains the confidence of his team but also of his management due to his honesty. With power, there needs to be great responsibility as it is essential to use this power innovatively and appropriately to motivate the team in the right direction.

Control- Effective control of the team is a critical part of delegation of authority as the person incharge has to ensure systematic and smooth operations within the team. In case of any friction among the team members or if the deliverables aren't being produced on time or if the team is having problems with certain external issues, then effective control has to be exercised to iron out any difficulties. Thus, control is an important part of delegating authority to a responsible person.

Coordination- A major reason why delegation of authority is popular in managing a large workforce is to ensure coordination not only within the team but also along with people from different teams. If each individual has to contacted and followed and reviews separately, then it would become a near impossible task. By delegating authority to a group leader, better coordination can be achieved as the person incharge would have a better understanding of the performance of the team and the environment.

Representative of team activities- As a person incharge of team activities, delegation of authority also ensures that the team is represented by a single point of contact. This not only helps in effectively managing a huge workforce but also ensure that the questions and matters raised by the team collectively are looked into by the senior management.

One person managing 5 people is challenging simple. For the same person managing 20 people is tough. And for the same person managing 100 people is impossible and chaotic. Growth of any company is based on the foundation laid down by the efforts of their workforce. For success, increasing man-power is more or less inevitable. And the solution to effectively manage a large pool of talent for maximizing their output can be done by delegation of authority.
