Definition: Register of Deeds
A Register of Deeds is a record maintained by a local government official regarding the records of a real estate deeds or other land titles. The register of deeds along with the grantor-grantee index is used for listing the owner of any property along with the transfers of property made.
Although the register of deed is available for the common public to view but sometimes there is a requirement of assistance by the government for accessing certain records or deeds of mortgages. The register of deeds, in the United States, is generally maintained on either of the three levels: county, town or state level.
Govts maintain their deeds under common law. They are filed in an order chronologically with a grantor/grantee index.
