Definition: Income elasticity of Demand

Income elasticity of demand is defined as the corresponding percentage change in demand due to a unit percentage change in the income. It basically indicates the sensitivity of demand to the income of the population.

It can be calculated as,

where D = demand and I = income, and DD and DI represent the corresponding changes in demand and income respectively.
