Occupational health and wellness of employees is an important concern for the HR department. Different organizations take up various methods to ensure their employees stay healthy. Wellness does not merely mean the absence of an illness, but also incorporates the proactive measures taken to promote health and prevent illnesses.
Health and wellness also includes the safety aspect of employees such as conducting regular fire drills and meeting the requirements as prescribed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Organizations adopt various methods to ensure good health of employees. Google provides their employees with healthy, organic cooked food in the best interests of employees. Some companies label their food with the number of calories it adds in order to create awareness among employees and reduce consumption of unhealthy food items. Many other organizations have gym or yoga facilities to ensure the employees are provided with the opportunity to exercise during the day. Other measures taken to promote health include pasting posters of various exercises that can be done at office to prevent aches such as back or neck pain. Some companies offer medical insurance for the employee and their dependents.
An advantage of providing health benefits is that people will be attracted to join the organization hence eventually increasing retention rate. However, one drawback is that if the health benefits do not make any real difference in employees’ lives it will have a negative impact on the organization’s reputation.
