Definition: Union Bureaucracy

Union Bureaucracy is a phenomenon where, power is in hands of working class and not some small group of capitalists. The industries are managed and run directly by workers. Union Bureaucracy can lead to a society where workers are no longer exploited by owners but society is managed by workers. Industries are not run for generating profit to the owners but for the benefit of society and themselves on a non profit basis.

 

The capitalist economy consists of two classes viz. Capitalist Class and Working Class. Capitalist Class consists of a small group of people who own the production and distribution of goods and services, and Working Class consists of majority of the other people who exchange their work in return for the wages or salaries.

 

The economy of a nation depends on the industries and businesses, and workers play a major role in running a industry. The combined workforce will have all the power, nothing can be produced, distributed or run without them. But this power of them would not be considered significant, considering their status in the society, as long as they stay dormant. The idea of union bureaucracy makes sense when workers build a movement which shows their power. It is only when the working class becomes more united, that would lead to the start of union bureaucracy. This would be a revolutionary movement which would replace capitalism.

 

The Union Bureaucracy shows a ideal situation, but to what extent is this possible is questionable. The Union Bureaucracy may also lead to the complacency in the workers. And as the competition reduces, the innovative methods of production to reduce the costs and increase the productivity, will decrease. These are some negatives aspects of Union Bureaucracy.
