Definition: Discrimination

In HR, the discrimination can happen in various processes such as:

•Recruitment

•Employment tests

•Screening

•Training

Etc.

The different types of Discrimination are:

•Direct Discrimination

This refers to making distinction on the basis of age, sex, disability, race, religion or sexual orientation.

Example: A candidate being rejected on the basis of his age.


•Indirect Discrimination

This refers to distinction through a rule or policy which indirectly supports a person of specific age, sex, disability, race, religion or sexual orientation.

Example:  A woman being selected on the ground of maintaining the gender ratio in a company.

 

•Perceptive Discrimination

This refers to direct discrimination on the ground that the person is perceived to be of a specific age, sex, disability, race, religion or sexual orientation irrespective of him/her actually being of that particular age, sex, disability, race, religion or sexual orientation.

 

Example: A candidate being selected for being perceived of having a strong political influence.


•Associative Discrimination

This refers to discrimination against a person on direct ground due to his/her association with another person of a specific age, sex, disability, race, religion or sexual orientation.

Example: A candidate being selected because he is a relative of a person from the management.

 

 

Such discrimination may occur during the various recruitment, hiring and training stages conducted by an organisation.
