What is Mobility of Labor and Workforce?

Mobility of Labor and Workforce means movement of the workers of an organization which maybe geographical or occupational.Commuting daily from home to office, changing home due to regular transfers or family issues etc. also come under mobility of labor and workforce.


Geographical mobility of workers involves movement of workers from one location to other with means like bikes, shuttle buses etc. whereas occupational mobility of workers involves movement of workers to new jobs, switching industries, transfer to other sectors etc.


In other sense, mobility of labor and workforce also means the worker’s ability to hone skills and take promotions or have advantage of other jobs. This type of mobility is called as upward mobility which needs experience, knowledge, cultural fit, acceptance from others etc.


There are several impediments to the mobility of labor and workforce like physical and mental ability, geographical hindrances, education levels and responsibilities pertaining to the family.


Example

Consider, paper industry and typewriter business. Two decades ago, these businesses were in demand and had large workforce. But with new generation of computers, both of them had struggled and got affected a lot. Number of people became jobless and this made workers to learn new skills and switch industries. The degree to which they were able to shift to new industries indicates the mobility of labor and workforce (Occupational mobility).
