Definition: Computer Aided Engineering (CAE)

CAE or computer aided engineering is the use of computer software to aid in tasks related in engineering analysis. CAE is basically the use of computer software to simulate performance to make improvisations to product designs or resolve engineering problems for industries of a wide range.

CAE includes:

• Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

• Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

• Multibody Dynamics (MBD)

• Optimization

Steps in CAE process:

a) Pre-processing- In this stage, engineers model the geometry and the physical properties of the design. They also model the environment and apply loads and constraints.

b) Solving- At the stage the model is solved using an appropriate mathematical formulation.

c) Post-processing- in the post processing stage, the results are presented to the engineer for review.

Benefits of CAE:

• Based on performance and its impact, design decisions can be made

• A lot of money and time can be saved as designs can be evaluated and they can be improved using computer simulation rather than physical prototypes

• CAE helps to provide performance insights at a early stage in the development process. At such a stage, design changes are less expensive to make

• CAE helps engineers as it facilitates risk management process and help in better understanding the performance implications
