Definition: Tonnage

The term tonnage is frequently used in Advertising. The term refers to large number of low cost and generally smaller print ads and commercial spots. These media forms are used as a cost effective alternative to larger and more sophisticated forms of promotional methods which usually demand higher cost.


It is a costs effective way of doing promotional activities as it is cost effective as compared to doing large promotions


The goal of tonnage advertising is to attract larger number of buyers to point of sale. In the age of social media, companies try to leverage low cost digitally published ads on social networks so that they get shared by the online community faster. The objective these companies try to fulfil is that of creating buzz about their products or services and increase word of mouth for the same.
