Definition: Sales Configuration System

A sales configuration system is a portable hand held device that allows a salesperson to identify the need of a prospect to generate a detailed proposal at the point of sale. The SCS is often linked back to the firm to enable the Area Sales Manager to get detailed reports for order entry, fulfilment, inventory management and invoicing in real time.

The SCS is a method of Sales Force Automation. They are thus enablers to reduce complexity and improve productivity for salespeople by helping them match customer needs to unique products and service offerings. The sales person also need to enter figures and reports by hand, which are time consuming, cumbersome and are prone to errors and omission.

The components of an SCS are data base, model base, knowledge base and interface.
