Definition: Internationalization

Also known as I18N (I - eighteen letters -N), is an approach of designing, planning and implementing product or services in such a way that they are easily adaptable by the users in many countries.

It implies that irrespective of the difference in culture and language the product will meet the needs of user in different nation. Internationalization process is also called as localization enablement or translation.

In order to suit the local language and culture, the internationalized product have to be localized. This helps the company to fit the needs of people.

For eg - It might mean designing a website that can be translated to different languages to suit consumer need or it may mean that the format of date for USA would be Jan 12 and for England it will be automatically displayed as 12 Jan.
