Definition: Extranet

An extranet is a computer network that allows controlled access from the outside, for specific business or educational purposes. It can be viewed in two contexts.

  • In a B2B context, an extranet works in isolation from all other Internet users joining an organization's partners, vendors, suppliers etc.
  • In a B2C context, its revolves around communicating with unknown consumer users

One can access an extranet only with a valid username and password. The identity of the user determines which parts of the extranet he/she can view.
