Porter suggested a framework to determine why some nations have a competitive advantage over the others and why some others lag behind.

Porter suggested that the reason for above can be determined by 4 factors:

  • Firm strategy, structure, and rivalry – The strategy followed by a firm to fulfill its objectives and the domestic rivalry
  • Factor conditions – The competitive advantage of nations in terms of skilled labour and infrastructure
  • Demand conditions – The demand for products in the domestic market
  • Related and supporting industries – These supporting industries enable the industry to say up to date with new developments and technical innovations , thus providing competitive advantage.
