E-mail marketing is an effective tool for direct marketing where marketers reach to the customers through mail. Customers often receive letters, catalogs and advertisements describing the products and services. To assist the consumers who wish to limit the amount of direct mail they receive, Mailing Preference Service (MPS) is a free service provided by the direct mail industry in UK. It prevents the consumers from unsolicited mails by adding the address of the consumer to the MPS file which is sent to the member companies.

The DMA Mail Preference Service greatly reduces the amount of advertising mail a person receives from marketers. MPS program does not eliminate all advertising mail, since not every direct marketing company participates in the service. To remove name from smaller local mailers, customers should contact those companies directly.
