Definition: Telephone Preference Service (TPS)

Similar to the mailing preference service, Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a UK register of domestic telephone number that makes sure that telephone number of customers is not available to the organizations and they are protected from unsolicited calls.

The individuals who do not want to receive unsolicited sales and marketing calls can register their number through Telephone Preference Service. Once an individual registers, it is the legal requirement that companies do not make such calls to number registered through TPS. However, TPS does not cover text messages and genuine market research calls.

The DMA Telephone Preference Service greatly reduces the amount of advertising calls a person receives from marketers. TPS program does not eliminate all sales and marketing call, since not every direct marketing company participates in the service. To remove name from smaller local callers, customers should contact those companies directly.

In India, there is do not disturb registry as per guidelines laid by TRAI to prevent unwanted telemarketing calls or text messages.
