Definition: Ordinal Scale

This scale is a tool that is used as a level of measurement of data. This scale, allows for ranking or ordering of the data, i.e. the data can be sorted. However, it does not capture the relative degree of difference between two consecutive values. We cannot quantify the difference between two levels in this ranking, and neither can we assume that the difference between two consecutive levels are equal in the entire scale.

For example, if we conduct a consumer satisfaction survey, say for an e-commerce site overall service level, an ordinal scale to represent the satisfaction level in the survey would be as follows,
