Definition: Staging

It refers to a process of storing goods before shipment in supply chain management. The designated area is known as ‘staging area’. Hence, staging area is the space used for interim storage only and should be located in proximity to the shipment area assigned to them.

The purpose of staging area can be either receiving or sending goods.

The advantage of staging is that it helps in maintaining better flow of goods in the supply chain. In absence of which goods need to be shipped directly, leading to congestion problems. In order to customize warehouse management, different staging areas can be allocated depending on type of products or their respective shipment area. Staging can also be used for assembling other entities like vehicles, people etc.
