Definition: Assignment

Assignment is a method used for allocating organizational resources. It is used to determine what resources are assigned to which department, machine or centre of operation in the production process. Assignment is used to allocate proper number of employees to a machine or task and the number of jobs that a machine or factory can produce.


In other words, Assignment is concerned with one to one basis when n jobs are to be assigned to n facilities with a view to optimizing the resource required. The emphasis in an assignment problem is to minimise the total cost or maximise the profits.


Hungarian Assignment method (HAM)

It is the commonly used method for solving assignment problems.
