Definition: Configuration

Configuration refers to the artifacts or elements that help building or designing any hardware or software operating system. Any mechanical device that is automated is generally configured to give optimum performance. Devices can be configured as per the customers’ requirement in order to fulfill customized needs.

Advantages of configuration are:

1. Improved reliability

2. Reduction of costs and risks

3. Better control over system


Configuration provides a user a degree of control over the various sub-parts and entities that are involved in the designing of a system. Thus it facilitates better usage over a system life cycle.



In case of IT- based systems, regulations are done by ITIL. For industrial or civil systems, ISO handles the regulations.


Configuration Management is a branch of management that deals with how to effectively carry out change management procedures in industry. They are based on five principles, as follows:

2. Configuration Identification

3. Configuration Control

4. Configuration Status Accounting

5. Configuration Verification and Audit
