Definition: Dock Receipt
A dock receipt is a documentary proof issued by the warehouse supervisor or port officer or the ocean carrier or the freight forwarder certifying that the goods have been received for shipment and they shall be taken for further delivery to storage facilities.
The dock receipt is issued to create accountability for the goods being shipped or forwarded. They ensure accountability for the safe custody of the cargo from the shipper of the cargo to the carrier of the cargo. The dock receipt also serves as a basis for preparing the bill of lading.
The dock receipt is surrendered at the shipping terminal or the place from where the goods are to be carried forward to acknowledge the receipt of goods by the forwarder. It serves as a documentary evidence of satisfactory transport of goods and ensure that transportation has been completed.
Dock receipts are prepared by the forwarders or the shipper of the cargo.
