Definition: Material Handling

Material handling is defined as the art of transporting, storing, handling and packing of materials or parts within a warehouse, manufacturing facility, logistics etc. Material handling is facilitated by the use of material handling equipment such as forklifts etc which can be either semi-automatic or fully automatic. Inventory holding contributes to a lot of cost within a manufacturing process and it is very important to have an efficient material handling process with the help of MRP systems.


It is very important to have an efficient process for time and space utilization. Material handling process includes certain steps such as unloading the parts in the inbound area, handling and storing of parts in warehouse, movement of parts to assembly area, movement of parts or finished products to the next area, loading of outbound vehicles.
