Definition: Long Ton

Long Ton is a unit of mass/measure equal to 1016 kg but is a term different from metric ton which is 1000 ton (2200 pounds). This term is commonly used for petroleum products.

Its name is derived from a term with meaning as barrel of the largest size, tun.

The metric and long tons don’t have much of a difference, so in case any confusion is there, any one of them can be used.

It can also be used as a unit of volume, ranging from 40 to 100 cubic feet.

It can be used as a unit of power, where it is the power to be given to one short ton of ice to be melted.

At the same time, it can also be used as unit of energy in case of TNT used.

40 cubic feet is supposed to be a measurement ton, but a larger number of cubic feet is taken as weight ton. It is also known as gross ton.

Measurement ton = 40 cubic ft.

Net ton, or short ton = 2,000 lbs.

Gross ton/long ton = 2,240 lbs.

Metric ton/kilo ton = 2,204.6 lbs.

Cubic meter = 35.314 cubic ft.
