Automatic vehicle identification is basically an autonomous identification technique used with moving objects such as vehicles. This is accomplished in two formats one is the use Radio frequency identification (RFID) as the object passes a RFID reader.

On the other hand, designed specifically for vehicles is the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system. In this system, a picture of the number plate is clicked and then using the Optical character recognition (OCR), the characters are identified which is then used to identify the vehicle.

Specifically the ANPR system, finds major utility in the law enforcement, where it is used by the police to identify the vehicles. Also, it is used in the automatic toll collection to identify the vehicle on toll roads.
