Definition: Data Matrix Code

It was developed in the United States in 1980s. It is a barcode that consists of rectangular or square pattern of black and white cells. Text or numeric data is encoded in this 2-dimensional data matrix. It is mainly used for permanent labeling on auto components, tools, surgical instruments etc.

AIM International has provided a standard specification for the data matrix code, which is designed keeping a fixed level of error correction capability.
