Definition: Quality Audit

Quality Audit is an essential part of the quality management of a company which is the process of regularly checking the quality of the systems by an auditor or an audit team. It is a necessity for obtaining the ISO quality standard ISO 9001. These audits are carried through defined time intervals and standard monitoring procedures for the systems to ensure proper assessment of the systems.


The purpose of audits is to verify the objective evidence and implementation of the processes, to increase the efficiency of processes by identifying the problem areas and eliminating them. Quality audits suggest the areas of good practice apart from solutions to the problems identified and also report non-standardized actions. The feedback of the quality audits should be shared with the other departments for improvement in the processes for better results.


Quality audits also help in increasing the safety of the workers by analyzing the deterioration of the working conditions and constantly monitoring the risk involved in carrying the processes in those working conditions.

Quality audit involves many processes and tasks which are usually managed using many software and assessment tools. These tools are associated to various domains like assessing the conformance to standards, or associated to costs of the poor quality involved.
