TOPIC: FDI in Multibrand Retail upto 51%

FDI in Multibrand Retail upto 51% 5 years ago #701

Foreign retailers can now own a 51% stake in the multi-brand retail sector. This will open doors for global groups such as Walmart, Carrefour and Tesco to open supermarkets in India. Will this really help indian economy.

It is said that it will create 10million jobs in 3 years and a the revenue will increase to $10 billion which will boost the economy ....one of the main disadvantage is that the local kirana shops will be affected due to price difference...

But already there are lot of indian super retailers like big bazaaar, more, DMart etc which already operate where the potential walmarts and carrefours would be operating so kirana stores are already pushed back

I believe that kirana stores will not be affected as our big cities and towns have already adapted to big retail chains. The kirana stores will exist along with big retailers. Anyways these big retailers will establish themselves in places with population of more than 1 million. There are around 53 cities and towns in India. This is good news for the consumers as it will create more competition..

It is not good for our country...thousands of traders will be rendered jobless. We are trying to compare with China which has allowed FDI in retail but we need to realise that china has very strong manufacturing sector while in our country service sector contributes more than manufacturing sector.

i tend to agree with himanshu...foreign retail will rendern thousands of people jobless..

Re: FDI in Multibrand Retail upto 51% 5 years ago #726

what i beleive is that it will not affect the kirana stores to much extent. People generally buy from kirana stores because of close proximity, home delivery and credit facility. All these will not be provided by foreign multibrand retailers. In fact in most of the cities, we have big organized retails like big bazaar, star bazaar, d mart etc...but still we have kirana stores coexisting with them...

most of the kirana stores deliver at the doorstops free of charge while vegetables are also delivered at the doorsteps using handcarts. Hence it will be difficult to change the habit of common Indian middle class

We are just trying to hide are inefficiencies by not permitting fdi in retail. This unorganized sector has very inefficient supply chain, local retailers avoids paying sales tax....all this can be rooted out if this sector becomes more organized

India has only 4% share in the organized retail as compared to 80% in US and some other developed countries. In fact in developing countries this percentage is higher. If we are trying to become developed then why not allow fdi in retail...
