with services forming substantial part of GDP, our manufacturing sector is lagging behind if compared with countries like china. What can be done to improve this sector

India can definitely rise in manufacturing. With cheap labor available, government needs to provide india needs to invest in infrastructure so as to compete with china. Govt. needs to build SEZs, roads and transport to attract manufacturing companies...

where is talent in manufacturing....if u ask choice of any aspiring engineer, he will most probably go for IT, computer sc or electronics engg...nobody wants to go for mechanical or civil or prod. as most of them are lured away by charm of IT companies..

it is the other way round...if there are jobs in any particular sector students will chase that branch. If manufacturing is made lucrative then u will see more and more students opting for core branches like civil and mechanical...

we dont have talent shortage in India but the real drive for this sector should come from government. Has indian government taken any step to provide boost to this sector...

India can rise in manufacturing, we dont have shortage of man power but the real shortage is of skills.
All the skilled population is either going into the IT sector or is being brain drained.
