The company started its operations in India from the year 1983. The brand is popularly known as Maruti which is bestowed onto it by its first car named “Maruti 800”, which revolutionalized the car market in India. The company has two manufacturing plants, one at Gurgaon and the other at Manesar, which have a combined facility of manufacturing 14,50,000 units annually. It is known for small cars only, but the company has tried to shed that image with cars like SX4 and Kizashi, without much success. With the launch of Ciaz in 2014, the company has again tried to enter the luxury segment and has got a good response. Making its intent clear in catering to luxury segment, it has now decided to form its new luxury brand, codenamed NEXA (similar to Toyota LEXUS and Nissan INFINITI). The company is the bellwether in designing notchback cars from hatchback cars (like Dzire designed from swift), strategy which was subsequently followed by many OEMs like Tata, Hyundai etc.
Its most selling cars are Alto 800, Alto K10, Wagon-R, Swift and Swift Dzire.
