With its headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa, Steinhoff International is an international integrated retail chain of furniture and fixtures.
It manufactures, sources and retails household goods and furniture. It is positioned to serve specially the value conscious customers of Europe, Africa and the Pacific Rim. Steinhoff basically operates through three business segments which are the African retail Operations, the International retail Operations and the Manufacturing, Sourcing and Logistics of International operations. The International Retail Operations retails furniture, home ware and house hold products. Along with furniture and household products the African Retail Operations also engages in the retail of consumer electronics, office automation, home entertainment and building supplies. Motor vehicles and vehicle servicing parts are also retailed by the African Retail Operations. The last segment i.e. the Manufacturing, Sourcing and Logistics segment offers warehousing and specialized distribution services. Also, Household products and home ware are manufactured as well as imported by this segment.
Steinhoff owns a number of brands in UK as well as in Europe. In the United Kingdom the brands owned by this company include high streets brands such as Harveys furniture, Sleepmaster, Bensons for Beds and Cargo.
The origin of this company traces back to 1964 when its founder, Bruno Ewald Steinhoff, started sourcing furniture from Eastern Europe and selling it in the Western Europe. This later was established as the Steinhoff International Holdings in 1988. In 2011 Conforama was bought by Steinhoff. This Acquisition was a major milestone in the history of the company as Conforama with its distribution network of more than 200 stores across Europe (France, Switzerland, Spain, Luxembourg, Portugal, Croatia and Italy) was the second largest retailer of home furnishings in Europe. In the same year Steinhoff also became a significant shareholder of 30% in the JD group.
