BASF is an acronym for Badische Anilin-und-Soda-Fabrik (English: Baden-Aniline and Soda Factory), which was the original name of the company when it was founded in 1865 in Baden by Friedrich Engelhorn. It operates in the segments: Chemicals, Oil and Gas, Performance Products, Agricultural Solutions, Functional Materials and Solutions. It has six integrated production sites and 353 additional production sites worldwide. It currently employs 113,000 employees worldwide. The Chemical segment comprises of basic chemicals and intermediates like solvents, plasticizers, glues and electronic chemicals and also raw materials for plastics, detergents,textile fibers, paints and coatings, and pharmaceuticals. The Performance Products segment contains food additives, vitamins and constituents for pharmaceuticals, hygiene, home and personal care. The Functional Materials and Solutions segment consists of bundle system solutions, services and products such as catalysts, battery materials, polyurethane system, engineering plastics, automotive and industrial coating and adhesives and paints, concrete admixtures. The Agricultural Solutions segment consists of crop protection products against fungal diseases. Lastly, the Oil and gas segment include exploration and production activities.
