Through its subsidiaries, Leucadia National engages in services including mining & drilling, telecom, healthcare, manufacturing, banking, lending, real estate, and winery. In the year of 2012, the Jefferies group announced their merger with Leucadia, which at that time where their chief shareholder. WMAC Investment Corporation, which is a subsidiary of Leucadia, is the largest backer of a company called ‘Pershing Square Capital Management’, a Delaware-incorporated investment partnership. Leucadia's highest profile move had been a bid in early 2004 to acquire about 50 percent of Telecommunications Company MCI's common stock. Nevertheless, after MCI established higher bids from other firms, Leucadia ultimately stepped back from the bidding process. The company primarily operates in the investment banking sector in the United States. For the diversified range of holdings currently possessed by Leucadia, the company is from time to time also called as “baby Berkshire Hathaway”.
