This top OS was founded in Palo Alto, California by Andy and et al.

Market Share: 81.5%

Its introduction in 2006 outweighed the rivals like Symbian and Windows OS because such a user friendly OS was never developed before. Its green coloured logo was designed by Irina Blok, graphic designer for Google.

Developed by Google and belonged to a UNIX – like OS family, Android is the common name today for anyone who plans to purchase smartphone. This OS is written in C, C++ and Java. It has an open source model and came into existence in 2008.

Various Android versions are Android 5.0 - Lollipop , Android 4.4 - KitKat , Android 4.1 - Jelly bean, Android 4.0 – Ice cream sandwich, Android 3.0 - Honeycomb, Android 2.3 -Ginger bread, Android 2.2 - Froyo, Android 2.0 - Éclair and Android 1.6 – Donut. KitKat version has the highest distribution till now. Latest release is of the Lollipop version which is coming in most of the newly smartphone brands such as Samsung, HTC, Sony etc. Android Auto is yet to come in the market.

Android target not only OS market but also other market segments such as tablets, phablets, wearable devices, TV, cars etc. Samsung mobile phones are the major contributors of this OS in the market today. This OS has added customizability to the phones and are easily integrated with other apps of the phones providing an awesome experience to the users. OS is available in around 60 languages around the world and is the widely accepted by today’s generation. Google play store already has around more than 1 million apps.

According to Gartner, Android based phones has surpassed the sales of billions in 2014. Through statistica’s report it was evidenced also that Android hold the highest market share in mobile OS. Google is also marketing its OS under its own smartphones too such as nexus tablets has the latest Android .But other smartphones can also get upgraded which helps it in increasing its market share worldwide.
