The coffeehouse chain is headquartered in Seattle, United States. It is the largest coffeehouse company in the world with more than 20,000 stores across 64 countries and territories. Starbucks was founded in 1971 by three students from University of San Francisco: Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl and Gordon Bowker. In 1984, the owners acquired Peet’s. The company went for a successful Initial Public Offering in June, 1992. Starbucks makes a significant amount of in-store sales through its Starbucks app.

In April 2003, Starbucks made a successful acquisition of Seattle’s Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia. From AFC Enterprises for an amount of $72 million. It also acquired most company-owned stores of its rival Diedrich Coffee in September 2006. The firm’s operations are spread in following segments: the USA, Europe, Middle East, Africa, China and Asia Pacific. Its brand portfolio also includes Tazo Tea, Evolution Fresh and La Boulange.
