Swire is known as Taikoo in China, which is the brand name for Taikoo Shing and Taikoo Cube Sugar. The Privately owned parent company of Swire group is John Swire and Sons Ltd. In its starting days, John Swire and Sons Ltd. was a modest Liverpool import-export company. In 1861, it started trade with China through agents. Butterfield & Swire was established in Shanghai in 1866, in partnership with R.S. Butterfield. They opened a branch of Butterfield & Swire at Hong Kong after 4 years. Later it closed all its offices in China and renamed Butterfield & Swire in Hong Kong to John Swire and Sons (H.K.) Ltd. Swire Group’s core Businesses in Hong Kong are held by Swire Pacific Ltd. The Group's core businesses are grouped into 5 categories. Those are: aviation, property, beverages, trading and industrial and marine services. Swire is also an anchor bottler in the Coca-Cola System. In 2008, the Company formed Swire Hotels to create and manage urban hotels in Hong Kong, Mainland China and the United Kingdom. John Swire & Sons (Green Investments) Ltd has acquired Argent Energy- a Scottish biodiesel producer. Argent Energy pioneered large scale commercial biodiesel production in the UK when it started production at its state of the art plant near Motherwell in Scotland in 2005.
