Tencent Holdings Limited, headquartered in Nanshan district, Shenzhen is a Chinese investment holding company.
Huateng is the current chairman and CEO of the company. Tencent's four major service platforms are web portals, ecommerce, social network, and multiplayer online games. It is the owner of hugely famous (in China) instant messenger Tencent QQ and QQ.com, one of the largest web portals in China. WeChat, mobile chat service has boosted Tencent's expansion into smartphone services.
Tencent Games is one of the four online platforms of Tencent, launched only in May 2013. It is an online game developer and operator and is the world’s largest online game community, by revenues and growth (FY 2014). Its strategy is based on a blend of in house development and cooperating with other companies as well. Its products relate to the underlying strategy of the firm, and are competitive and healthy, focusing on the needs of the players as well as the ease of use. The company holds stakes in companies like Activision Blizzard, Riot Games and Epic Games.
Monthly active users for Tencent’s smartphone are 603 million, up 23 percent from a year ago. Combined number of users for its Weixin and WeChat services were up by 39%, amounting to 549 million. Revenues from smartphone amounted to $700 million, up by 82% from last year. With a growth of 28% from online gaming revenue, mostly driven by new, diverse and innovative smartphone games, the company has managed the desktop to mobile shift commendably. Recently, the company entered in to a partnership with NBA to give an access of basketball video streams to Chinese users.
Some of the famous multiplayer online games by Tencent include Dungeon & Fighter, Xunxian ,QQ Fantasy, QQ Three Kingdoms, QQ Dancer, War of Zombie, etc. Some popular games on smartphone include shooting games and quiz show like Infinity Blade Saga, I Am MT2, Naruto and Carrot Fantasy 3.
