It was founded in 1948 and has its headquarters at Bogota, Columbia. It was formerly known as Empresa Colombiana de Petróleos S.A. It is one of the four principle petroleum companies of Latin America. It is the first company in Colombia involved in every link in the chain of hydrocarbons, from finding and producing oil and gas, to marketing and processing into fuels and products with higher added value, such as petrochemicals. Ecopetrol SA is in mainly three business segments: Exploration & Production, Refining & Petrochemicals and Transportation & Logistics. The Exploration & Production segment involves oil & gas exploration and production activities and its operations include extraction, collection, treatment, storage and pumping or compression of hydrocarbons. The Refining & Petrochemicals segment involves refining activities and its products include motor fuels, fuel oils and petrochemicals. The Transportation & Logistics segment engages in the pipelines and other transportation activities. The Company is inclined towards innovation, technology, knowledge and the development of competitive advantages. Ecopetrol had taken several social ventures. In 2009 it adopted Human Rights Guide and joined the United Nations Global Compact. Ecopetrol redefined its environmental strategy to go beyond what is required by law and become a world-class Company, recognized, among other things, for the commitment to environmental care. Recently Ecopetrol is planning to acquire Hocol, a company engaged in exploration and production of hydrocarbons in Colombia. Ecopetrol plan to revive them globally with their 2020 plan where they aim at value creation, sustainability and efficiency and capital discipline. They target of 6 Bn USD of structural cumulated savings by 2020.
