National Thermal Power Corporation is a public sector undertaking under the Government of India, Ministry of Power.

It is primarily engaged in the electricity generation business. It is head quartered in New Delhi and was founded in 1975. It generates electricity which it sales to the State electricity boards and state owned power companies in India. It has also ventured into gas exploration, oil and coal mining activities. In 2010, it was given the Maharatna status by the Government of India. Mr. Arup Roy Choudhary is the Chairman and MD of the corporation. It operates from 55 location in India, 2 in Bangladesh and 1 in Sri Lanka. It has a total installed capacity of 43,803 MW with 7 gas based stations and 17 coal based stations. In addition to this, 6 coal based stations operate under Joint Venture. Vindachal Thermal Power Station in Madhya Pradesh has the highest individual capacity. NTPC targeted to add 14,058 MW of capacity in the 12th 5-year plan (FY13-FY17) to meet the ever rising demand. It recently signed a MoU with Kyushu Power Co. in Japan for exchange of Information and experts of the business. It is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange. The Government of India presently holds approximately 70% of the equity shares in the company.
