In Japan the primary sector is Agriculture, forestry, and fishing.
In Japan only 20% of the land can be cultivated. Hence the govt has taken a lot of efforts to give proper subsidies and protect the interest of the farmers. In the late 19th century these industries had accounted for more than 80% of employment. Owing to limited land, majority of the farmers in Ja-pan had earned through non-farming activities as well. In 1990, Japan was 67% self-sufficient in agricultural products and provided for around 30% of its cereal and fodder needs.
