Turkey has a geostrategic importance as it is located in between Europe and Asia.
The country co-vers 783,562 km² of land and has 35% cultivated land of around 265,000 km² area, while 15% area is covered by forests. The country’s population has crossed 75 million people and its GDP per capita is 10,971.66 USD. Turkey is one of the very few self sufficient countries and attributes its self-sufficiency in food to its fertile soil, adequate climate and abundant rainfall. However in the moun-tainous areas, animal husbandry is the main source of revenue.
Some of the major crops grown in Turkey include hazelnuts, figs, apricots, raisins, grapes, olives, apples, cherries, potatoes, strawberries, tomatoes, tea, wheat and cotton. Also the vegetable prod-ucts account for 76% of total agricultural production while contribution from fisheries and animal husbandry is minimal. The country exports pulses, cereals, industrial crops, sugar, nuts, fresh and dried fruits, vegetables, and olive oil.
