Carrefour SA is a multi-channel, multi-local and multi-format retail company that has operations in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America.
This French company owns one of the largest hypermarket chains in the world and it is the third largest retail group in the world in terms of profit. The company operates hypermarkets, supermarkets, Cash and carry stores, e-commerce websites, convenience stores and hyper-cash stores.
Through their e-commerce platforms Carrefour.fr and ooshop.fr they offer food and non-food based products. This company also has operations in insurance activities, rental of shopping malls, travel agency services and franchise operations.
The company was set up by the Fournier, Badin and Defforey families who ran a discount supermarket in Annecy in 1960s. Later in 1969 Carrefour invented a new store concept, today popularly known as the hypermarket. The first Carrefour hypermarket was opened in Sainte-Geneviève-des-bois, which had a floor area of 2,500 sq. m and has up to 400 parking spaces.
Recently the company has 12296 stores under its group name with over 380000 employees worldwide who serve over 100 million customer households.
Carrefour has clearly framed the company policies based on low prices, quality products, and convenience, trust and quality services. It is known for the tight integration of its stores with the locality and taking actions that support local sustainability. During its international expansion the company is careful in not exporting the French made products, instead the company encouraged marketing the local products.
Main competitors to the company such as Auchan, Euromarche and Casino followed Carrefour’s lead in the industry. The company’s biggest acquisition move to acquire Promodes SA has given it the leap it needed to compete with Walmart, which was trying to enter its region.
