BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke AG) started its journey in 1921 as an aircraft engine manufacturer and produced its first motorcycle R-32 in 1923 which had flat twin boxer engine.
This engine is still used in some motorcycles but now BMW manufacturers various engines for different motorcycles. Motorcycle manufacturing now operates under the brand named BMW Motorrad, and the strong backing of the brand BMW, helps it to have a great brand presence across the world.
The production of BMW motorcycles takes place in Berlin, Germany where they have their state-of-the art plant and manufacture large range motorcycles of 450cc, 800cc, and 1200cc and 1300cc engine capacity.
Their engines are manufactured mostly in Austria, Taiwan and China. BMW has motorcycles under different segments namely Sport, Tours, Roadster, Heritage, Adventure and Urban mobility under which the bikes are classified under product families and each family is assigned a different letter prefix like C, F, G, K, S and R series which have different engine configuration in their motorcycles.
BMW Motorrad is a regular entrant in Dakar Rally which is an annual truck, car and motorcycle race that is held in South America and has featured famous riders like Simon Pavey and Charley Boorman, a motorcycle celebrity. BMW Motorrad has emerged as a winner of Dakar Rally six times. BMW Motorrad had a number of new models that helped the motorcycles segment deliver outstanding performance in the recent years. Recent launches included C650 Sport and C650GT model updates in December 2015. These models are an ideal combination of touring comfort, sporting flair and urban mobility. BMW new launches R nineT scrambler, G 310 R and F 800 GS models were displayed at the EICMA. Apart from the powerful engines they will offer great riding pleasure. BMW also manufactures merchandise that also involves bike accessories and safety gears.
