Music is part of our lives whether we realize it or not, whether we actively participate in it or not, whether we appreciate its power or not. This is, in fact, the real power of music - that it can affect us whether we are aware of it or not. We buy our favorite music in record stores, we download from the internet, we search for the latest videos on youtube or we tune in to our favourite radio stations. Then there’s live music, be it school friends with a guitar during the lunch break, a nightclub with just a few tables, or a large concert or giant arena where thousands are gathered to share in the experience of music making.

Through my submitted infographic, I have tried to highlight the importance of music in the lives of college going students and showcase some key insights regarding their listening habits, genres of interest, devices being used, etc by conducting a survey regarding their musical interests.

Some of the results indicate that music is very highly regarded by students in their lives. Over 800 participants aged 18-26 years from various colleges around the country have participated in a survey which consisted of the following questions:

1. What is your main source of Music?

Battle between cd/cassette & mp3 files. Through this question. We gather that digital hasn’t yet killed analogue. It tries to demonstrate the undeniable truth that there always has been and always will be a demand for quality sound – sound beyond compressed MP3.

2. Your favorite Music Genre?

This question gives us insights into the different types of music students enjoy ranging from Bollywood to rock, trance & pop music.

3. What gadget do you use the most to listen to your favorite tunes?

With Technology advancing so quickly, the way students ‘consume’ music has also rapidly changed over time. Through this question, we try to see what devices are majorly used for music.

4. Where do you often listen to music?

5. How often to do you attend live performances?

Music brings people together. Through this questions we try to highlight how much students like to engage in listening or watching bands/artists in groups and how easily they open themselves up to strangers. There is a certain type of connection that comes when you listen to music in a group. This type of behavior is rooted in our history and our discoveries as human beings.

6. What do you think of our Local Music Channels on TV? (Mtv, Channel V, Vh1 etc.)

Trying to highlight whether the students think our music channels are doing a good job or not or do they not bother watching them because they can download music from the internet now.

7. Are you the sort that needs to know the name of the singer and the song title when it comes to some of your favourite tunes?

Just to see how much importance do lyrics & artist information plays to our subconscious while listening music & how much do we relate to it deeply.
