Alonso’s dethroning of Michael Schumacher made him well known world wide. Alonso has been responsible for igniting an F-1 boom in his native Spain where he is a media darling. He is known to be close to his family, moving back to his native Oviedo despite the heavy tax burden he would incur. Alonso’s image as a competitor who fights till the very end has made many brands queue up for his signature


Alonso has been criticised for failing to get along well with team mates, especially when there is no designated NO:1 in the team.His relationship with Lewis Hamilton at McLaren was acrimonious and the two, who were fighting for the world championship going in to the last race of the 2007 Formula 1 season could not see eye to eye and had to watch  Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen take the crown. Alonso  left the team after just one season. He has also been accused of using aggressive tactics on the race track, namely  brake testing his opponents to gain advantage.
