A calm and composed man, his off field characteristics don't differ from his on field discipline and behavior.  He restrains himself from flashy occasions and indulges in brands which are health benefiting (eg. for Movement against Tobacco). This can be approved by the fact that he rarely missed any test matches since his debut.  His assurance at the crease, motivating and helping the batsmen at the other end to deliver truly amazes us and make us believe him when he comes on TV as brand ambassador for Bank of Baroda and MAX life. Even today he is genuinely interested in the development of the game, and never hesitates to offer suggestions for the same.


Criticism

His inability to score quickly in one day internationals during initial years and him being not a great leader were his major criticism. However he silenced his critics when he scored many blazing innings and the Indian team won test series in WI and England after more than 3 decades, which speaks a lot about his determination and willingness to succeed at the highest level.
