Cities all over the world are being overburdened with a huge population moving in search of job and career opportunities. Some of the biggest cities in the world have got millions of people residing as these cities provide the best opportunities to make a career and earn money and grow. Due to this, there are several challenges which cities are facing due to over population and limitation in resources. However, with the advancement in technologies, cities world wide are willingly experimenting and adopting newer ways and means to have better management of resources, save costs and make lives of people much better.

The concept of smart cities focuses at places being technologically advanced by adopting and implementing AI or machine based solutions. This helps in increasing efficiencies of limited available resources and also helps in reduction of costs. Efficiencies can be increased in smart cities by optimising the use of a particular solution only when it is required. Similarly, costs can be reduced by using smart solutions which are cheaper in the long run or are technologically advanced. Smart solutions also keep a strong focus on keeping the environment on top priority. All these smart solutions would contribute in the future, and help in building a smart city.

Some innovations which have been implemented in some cities are highlighted below:

1.Street lamps-

Currently, street lamps in cities are managed by the electricity department where in the lights are turned on at dusk and keep the streets lit till dawn. This was a solution which provides light whenever there is night. However, over a period of time innovations have improve the same. Smart solutions like censors determining the amount of light in the area or a person/car travelling or use of energy saving LEDs can help in providing a much more efficient solution. These innovations have been implemented in many cities and has enabled them to save millions of dollars.

2.Toll Plazas-

Toll plaza centres at busy road junctions or expressways currently are manned across various places. It is a time consuming process where people have to stop at a toll booth, render exact change, get their ticket and then cross the toll. Not only this a time consuming process which takes approximately 30-60 seconds per car, but also labour intensive. With smart solutions, RFID chips are being implemented in cars with sensors present at toll booths. These chips are connected with the bank accounts of the driver. As and when a car passes a toll booth censor, the money gets debited automatically from the account. This being an automated process saves all the time and does not need any staff as well.

3.Smart Dustbins-

Modern day cities generate tonnes of garbage everyday and it is the responsibility of the municipal department to ensure that the streets and bins are clean. As of now, the garbage picking truck is mostly scheduled pick litter based on calendar days across routes. With smarter solutions, the filled-up rate of bins are monitored and accordingly the routes and schedules are evaluated. So places with more garbage are given priority over those areas where the requirement is low.

4.Irrigation Sensors-

Parks and gardens in cities require a good amount of water to ensure that trees and plants in the area keep on flourishing. However, manually it is not possible to ensure that the entire geography gets covered. Innovative solutions ensure that sensors can determine the amount of rain, humidity, surface water levels etc. Thus those areas where there is scarcity of water can be treated first over those areas where plants and trees can survive naturally.

5.Water pipes-

Sensors in the city water system can also be very effective in enabling a city to be smart. The sensors can check multiple parameters like water flow, water levels, bacteria count, cleanliness of water etc. Since all this water directly flows in homes, it becomes critical to monitor these constantly. Such solutions would empower government organizations to provide clean drinkable water to every house free of any harmful elements.

The above are just a handful solutions which can help cities of the future grow. All these innovative technologies implemented in real life scenarios can make cities more efficient, help protect the environment and save millions of dollars over a period of time. The countries and cities which adopt these smart solutions would be ahead in the race in providing a better and healthy lifestyle to the people.
