Definition: Upstart

It refers to a person who has suddenly risen to a higher social and economic class but lacks the social skills required for that new class. It has to learn the social grace that will make him suitable for that new position. It has yet to be accepted by the other members of the new higher social and economic class.


A person may suddenly rise from low positions to prominence or consequence. Or the person may rise suddenly, as from low status to wealth, power, or honor; a parvenu. He has still to learn the general norms followed by that new class. So that he is accepted by the other members of the new class.
