Definition: Background Check/Investigation

Background checks or verifications are performed by companies for potential candidates they want to hire. Background check includes checking the details about the educational qualifications, past employers, credit history and criminal background if any.

Such verifications serve multiple purposes. Companies want to ensure that all the details provided the candidate is authentic .It ensures that the candidate has worked at the stated employers for the stated duration of time at the stated designations. At times, these verifications are necessary for getting government clearances required for the job role for which the candidate is being hired.

The activity of background verification has gained even more importance in recent times with an increasing global workforce, digital privacy issues ,increasing involvement of employees in corporate crimes and employee exposure to customer sensitive data.

Companies often outsource the verification process to external agencies.
