What is Social Distancing?

Social distancing is a concept in which people are advised to stay away from other people or stay at home to avoid spread of a communicable or contagious disease. Social distancing concept became critical, especially during the Covid 19 (coronavirus) outbreak of 2020. Social distancing became the most sought-after solution to control the spread of viral transmission by ensuring there is not physical contact between people.

It is important in cases where viral infections or diseases are spread through coughing, sneezing droplets, physical contact, indirect contact etc.

Importance of Social Distancing

It is critical to ensure that a rapid spread of the infection is curtailed, which otherwise grows exponentially. The coronavirus outbreak spread quickly from human to human leading to large groups of people getting infected and becoming potential carriers. The most important aspect of social distancing is that it breaks the chain of virus spread. It is very important to control further spread while the healthcare & paramedics are able to control.

How Social Distancing Works?

It becomes an important concept to avoid spread the exponential growth of any viral. This can be understood from 2 scenarios where, scenario A is no social distancing & scenario B is social distancing. This is explained graphically as below:

Social Distancing

Without social distancing, all the people get exposed & the virus spreads to every individual in contact with the infected person, whereas practicing social distancing ensures that many people are not effected by the viral infection. The above diagram shows the difference between when social distancing is practiced and when not practiced.

Steps & Measures for Social Distancing

It can be achieved by the following ways

1. Stay at home as much as possible and be in self-isolation or quarantine

2. During social distancing, go out only if it is essential to buy grocery, medicines or anything urgent

3. When outside, maintain a distance of minimum 3-6 feet from others

4. Do not touch surfaces and clean / santize hands if you touch anything

5. If a person has any symptoms, stay isolated completely and see a doctor

6. During social distancing, schools, colleges, public gatherings, concerts, sports should be closed

7. Non-essential service-related workplaces should be closed & there should be work from home for employees

8. All modes of transport including bus, rail, cabs, airlines should be closed

These measures & steps are critical to reduce the pace at which any communicable infection like coronavirus spreads.

Impact of Social Distancing

It would have both positive and negative impacts on people.

Positive Impacts of Social Distancing

a. Positive immediate effects would be the control of virus to spread further which would be of paramount importance given the ability of virus to infect thousands in matter of days.

b. It would ensure governments to plan for the days ahead once there is a slowdown in new cases of infection

c. It would flatten the curve ie reduce the exponential growth of the spread of viral infection like coronavirus

d. It would give time to healthcare institutions, hospitals to treat the existing patients as well as focus on creating a vaccine for the virus

e. Social distancing along with a lockdown can help spread infection from one geography to another else it can turn into a pandemic like in the case of coronavirus

Negative Impacts of Social Distancing

a. Economy would not work if people are at home and not working, and hence can lead to a severe economic recession.

b. Option to work from home might not be feasible for many people in the population, especially who are daily wage workers.

c. Social distancing & lockdowns will disrupt the socio-economic concept of people living in a society
