Definition: E-learning

E-learning, as the name suggests, refers to learning that takes place electronically. Internet is being increasingly used for teaching and learning. A large number of distant learning programs have been started by universities to provide courses to people physically away from these centers of teaching.

E-learning can take place via various mechanisms like instant messaging, audio-video conferencing, shared whiteboard, virtual classroom, chat etc. However, e-learning does not require internet or intranet necessarily. The use of multimedia for collaboration in a classroom also comes under the ambit of e-learning.
